COWBOY is we believe a pit / lab mix. He is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heartworm and tick-disease tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of April 2015 and weighs around 57 pounds.

COWBOY was saved from Fort Worth Animal Shelter in Texas by a vet tech as he was almost feral and scheduled t be killed. She spent time working and socializing him and with time, love and patience he has come a long way being much more social with dogs and humans.

COWBOY is initially still wary of people whom he doesn't know and he will growl and sometimes he will move out of the way where he can observe and watch the person. This generally does not last long and the short time he has been here at the rescue is getting used to new people coming and going and is slowly gaining confidence.

COWBOY does get on great with other dogs, his best friend STEWART, a collie whom he lived with at our vet tech friends house whom he lived with before coming to the rescue has recently been adopted and he does miss him, but is happy with the other dogs. COWBOY loves to play ball and chase and run with the other dogs. He is extremely affectionate and will climb on your knee if you let him and just enjoy all the love and affection he is getting and of course giving back equally as much. Once he bonds, this boy is your friend and love-bug for life.

COWBOY walks good on a leash and he rides great in a car. We do not have cats in the rescue, but we do have a rabbit in two large dog-crates in the living room. COWBOY does sit and watch "BUGS" but he has not shown any aggression or tried to get to BUGS. I think COWBOY would be ok with cats, although of course some training and guidance is to be expected when introducing cats and dogs.

COWBOY needs a family that is experienced and or understands the pit-type breed. A family who has the time and patience to work on his insecurities and help he learn that not all people are bad, who understands that when he growls at people, that is just him and his insecurities and encouragement and patience is needed to be continued to help him grow through his issues - which as mentioned he has already shown progress. However, due to his breed, this is all the more important as people who do not understand dogs, can take growling as a sign of aggression, which is absolutely not the case with COWBOY. Within 10 minutes of our volunteers coming round, COWBOY initially backed off and did a low growl, but was soon enough in their laps, thinking he was a small terrier - enjoying all the love and giving lots of kisses.

COWBOY is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $350.

If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious boy  a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 3-7 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements.

COWBOY is located at the rescue in SEBEC, MAINE. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. There is a local hotel in Dover-Foxcroft that is pet-friendly (approx 6 miles) and several in Bangor (approx 45 miles). There are also lots of wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend.
