Update - 5th July 2011
Colonel has had his rear leg amputated, he is currently recovering and doing very well. He has been given a new estimated age of approx 3 years, as he is still very energetic. It is hard to tell because his teeth shows signs of him having had distemper, and so are very yellow with loss of enamel.
Once Colonel has recovered from his amputation, he will begin Heartworm treatment, this boy has been through so much and yet his personality just continues to shine through.
He is so loving, and just wants to love and be loved. Once he has recovered from his leg amputation, I will be looking to find him his forever home. If he is adopted before Heartworm treatment is complete, GaDaH will fund this to ensure that he is adopted out with no problems or incurring the adopters any additional expense.

Colonel is estimated to be around five (5) years old. He was taken in as a stray at Animal Care Services and had a kill date of 2nd May 2011.
Give a Dog a Home - San Antonio rescued him, and is working on getting him back to good health. He is very skinny, has sore skin, and what appears to be an old fractured leg, that has self healed and so he walks on three legs.
He has been with GaDaH since 5th May 2011 and is doing great, he is eating healthy, natural food, with plenty of coconut oil, honey, colostrum, seameal, liver and heart to help build up his immune system.
He is being treated with nu-stock cream and that is helping heal his skin and any sore spots, his coat is not getting to a good condition and when he is back in good health, he will be even more handsome than he is now.
Colonel is going back to the vets in 1-2 months when he has gained some weight, there he will have x-rays and it will be determined if his leg can be broken and re-set, or if it will need to be amputated, the vet is doubtful it can be reset as it appears it is a very old injury, but nothing will be ruled out until the x-rays.
Colonel has the sweetest temperment, I brought him home with another GSD from ACS, both males, both only been fixed the previous day, and coming home to be amongst 3 x 3mth old pups, and my own 3 german shepherds. There was not, nor has there been any trouble, obviously my alpha made it clear she was alpha and this was her home, and her rules.
Colonel wants nothing more than to be beside me and be loved, if I'm sat on the floor he comes behind me and licks my ear, he tries to sit on me knee, he would go on the sofa, if I would let him, and he stares into my eyes with such compassion.
If you are interestd in meeting Colonel, we can arrange that, I would be happy for anyone to come over and have visits with him, spend time with him and get to know each other, building up the ever so important relationship.
He deserves someone that can give him a good life that he deserves, I don't know his story since he was a stray, but he has one of those looks that old war hero's have, you look into their eyes and you know they have seen and been through much suffering and all they want to do now is to settle down, relax and enjoy the rest of their days with their family.
There is no doubt that Colonel will be a devoted companion, on 3 legs he gets around very quickly, up and down stairs with no problems at all.
Colonel really needs a special someone to love him and take his love and devotion. At this point, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about him. He really is a beautiful, affectionate dog and I am so glad GaDaH saved his life.
Colonel's adoption fee, will be a minimum donation of $250
UPDATE - 14th JUNE 2011
Colonel is doing great, he is getting really playful, he likes to play with the other dogs, plays ball with me, or is quite happy to amuse himself with either a tennis ball, or a squeaky toy.
Colonel walks well on the leash, although he needs a fast pace, so he can keep his rhythm going being that he only uses 3 legs. He is extremely agile and goes up and down a metal spiral staircase with ease, jumps in and out of cars and runs as fast as the other dogs. His disability causes him no problems at all.
I am currently fundraising to get money so that I can get Colonel back to the vets and surgery performed. It is most likely his leg will need amputating, and so recovery will not take long. I am now looking at finding Colonel a loving forever home. If you meet this boy, he looks soulfully into your eyes, and you can see he has been through a lot, and suffered a great deal of pain. His personality just shines on through though, he wants nothing more than to show compassion and get some loving back.
Colonel is an middle aged dog, so he gone through all his reckless, boystrious years, yet is not yet old where he just wants to lie and relax all day, he is still active, and loves going on walks through the woods, where he can smell all the natural smells. His teeth have the appearance that he has probably had distemper, just something else to melt the heart and want to give this boy some loving and a happy life.
If you are looking for a well natured, compassionate, devoted dog that needs moderate excercise, but is also happy to relax beside you and share the love, then this is your boy.
Please contact me if you would like to meet Colonel - there is never any obligations on meeting any of the GaDaH dogs, so just come along and meet him and have the experience of seeing an amazing dog that still has a happy personality after everything he has been through.
