SHEP came to the rescue from a State of Maine seizure case whilst he was on hold pending a court order. He was at the rescue around a month and then transferred to the rescue. He was saved from a home where he and 41 other dogs and cats were living in a single-wide trailer.

SHEP is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine and is available for an adoption fee of $350. Read all his information and if interested, go to the rescue website to submit an adoption application.

SHEP has been estimated to be around 1  year old and weighs 39 pounds. He has had his rabies, core vaccines, blood/chem/4dx testing and is negative for heartworm and tick disease. His blood and chemistry show no cause of concern. He is on monthly preventatives and has been de-wormed.

A contract will need to be signed that SHEP will be neutered at your own veterinarians earliest convenience. Payment will be arranged directly with the veterinarian and the cost of neuter will be no expense to adopters.

When SHEP arrived he was extremely fearful and skittish, but very affectionate, he has clearly not had a nice time for so far and takes reassurance with humans he has learned to trust and literally hugs and gives kisses. He has gained confidence in the month that he has been here and as soon as he see's me will come running up to greet me.  He has access to a large fenced in area with 3 other dogs and enjoys playing with them, but also has a hide out where he hangs out when he wants his own time. He does walk on a leash, but is not trained to walk in a straight line, so time, patience and training is needed. He can be needy and clingy, which is understandable for all that he has endured. He has been exposed to kittens and was not interested in them at all. Of course in a home, when he has settled in and cats and darting around, might change things, however, for now he has no interest at all.

Collies are one of the top most intelligent breeds and of course being a herding breed are extremely active so we are looking for a family that not only has the time and patience to help this boy transition to a new home and gain confidence, learn to trust and enjoy all the love and cuddles he has to share, but also an active family who can work with him and ensure he gets the lifestyle that he needs to keep him happy and healthy mentally and physically.

Dogs have access and use dog doors to go outside, they will not know to let you know they need to go outside, so families must expect accidents and be prepared to teach your new dog to let you know when they need to go outside.

The rescue buys food in bulk, by the truck load and there are a variety of brands and flavours. None of the food given is less than a 4* food rating. There have not been issues with eating any of the varying foods. It is important that you do your research on the ingredients and speak to your vet or a nutritionist on grain vs grain free!

You MUST understand that dogs need time to decompress and adapt to their new environment and home. It is a HUGE transition they make from the kill shelter, being vetted, on transport for 3 days and arriving in Maine where the temperature and such is very different to what they have only known. In rescue there is what is known as the "3 Point Rule" Days 1-3 your dog is stressed, anxious, confused as to where they are now. Weeks 1-3 your dog is adjusting, settling in, learning things. At the 3-month point, your dog understands they are home, and have built up a trusting relationship where they feel loved and secure.

If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the ADOPTION INFO tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 1-2 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then we can schedule your appointment to come to the rescue in Sebec, Maine for meet/greet/adopt

Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks.
