SHELBY-1 was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas where dogs have just 3 dogs to be saved and transported to the rescue in Sebec, Maine. SHELBY-1 is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, heartworm and tick disease tested negative, de-wormed, monthly preventatives and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 18 August 2016 and at the time of rescue in the end of August 2019,  weighed around 58.00 pounds. The shelter has a breed listing of German Shepherd Dog. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely.

When Shelby arrived at the rescue she was extremely thin, scared and very withdrawn, she wouldn't eat for a few days and would shy away and shudder if I went to touch her. I started feeding her raw meat with cottage cheese and Dyne which is a high calorie supplement, which she did start to eat. Over he first two weeks she was still very withdrawn and I decided to bring her over to the house to live in the bedroom so she could get more used to me.

The first few days she was still very quiet, but I brought a puppy in the room and she instantly perked up and was very interested and nurturing to the pup. Since then her personality has just come out more and more and she is a happy girl. She enjoys lying and sleeping on the bed, she loves the kittens, she loves pups and small dogs. I have kept her away from the bigger dogs for now, just because I think she would be over-whelmed and I want her to continue to be relaxed and gain confidence.

When in the kennel she would use the dog door to go out and do her business and in the house she is using pee pads. I would say that she won't know to let you know she needs to go out, so accidents are to be expected.

Shelby is a beautiful soul that has clearly had a neglectful, most likely abusive past. She still has a LOT of weight to gain but that will be a slow progress as her stomach will have shrunk a lot. She is now eating normal kibble, although I do still give her raw meat, liver, cottage cheese and the Dyne high calorie supplement which she enjoys and eats a full bowl.

Shelby needs a family that is going to give her time to continue to gain weight, trust, gain confidence and feel safe and secure. She is truly an affectionate girl who loves to give kisses and cuddle, she loves to kiss the cats, although sometimes she has had a swat on the nose for being too persistent but she is respectful to the cat and will back off. She has a mischievous streak to her where she will try and sneak my paperwork away and she always picks up the empty dog bowl and takes it to where she is hanging out. She likes to play with the cats squeaky toys and enjoys chewing on the beef hooves.

Although she doesn't need a highly active lifestyle, she will do when she has gained weight and has had the nutrient that she has been lacking. She is playful, inquisitive and would be a fantastic addition to any loving family that is willing to give her time, love and everything this girl deserves in life.

SHELBY-1 is available for adoption for an adoption fee of US $550.

This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food, general day to day cost of running a brick and mortar rescue and anything else that is needed. Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada.

If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements.

Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks.
