LUCKY was originally saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, he was not at the rescue long before he was adopted at the end of December 2016.

LUCKY sadly had to come back to the rescue at the end of March as the families circumstances have changed and they do not have the time to work with him on training and such and he was getting a little too boisterous and controlling.

LUCKY is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease (SNAP 4DX) tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 11 November 2015 old and weighs around 65 pounds.

LUCKY's former family who had named him Fawkes, provided the following information:

Fawkes/LUCKY is a very affectionate and loyal dog. He loves to follow you around and be involved in what you're doing. He loves going on walks and has been trained not to pull, and is very at walking right by your side. His favorite toys are ropes and squeaky animals. For treats, he loves frozen peas and anything with peanut butter. Fawkes/LUCKY knows basic obedience: sit, stay, come, let go, and down as well as a few tricks like "give a paw" and "dance" which he loves. He's also been trained to sit and stay before he eats, until you give him the okay. He loves going on adventures and rides very well in the car. 

They also said that he has separation anxiety, but I do not know to what extent. They didn't say he destroyed anything so I think it is more of a whining/wanting to get to be where they are. They said another problem they had was him being protective of his home and family. This is a very typical German Shepherd Dog trait and they absolutely must have a human alpha family or they will feel that they need to take charge and this is where things can start to go wrong.

When LUCKY came back to the rescue he settled back in great, he plays fantastically with the other dogs, he loves to chase and wrestle with the bigger, high energy dogs and can literally be playing almost all day. He is great in that he adapts his play with the smaller dogs that want to play and mingle with the big dogs, he will still play and chase with them, but not be as rough. He has also proven to be very gentle with the 5wk old puppies that are here at the rescue and starting to explore and meet the pack.

We do NOT have cats at the rescue so we cannot say how he will be with cats, although his formerly family said he doesn't do well with them. I imagine this is very much more of him wanting to chase and play with them, going from his personality.

LUCKY did initially bark at people when they came round, however, I made sure he knew this wasn't acceptable and if he didn't stop I would put him in a crate in another room for a few minutes. I would then go and let him out and if he continued to bark, I would put him back in the crate for a little longer. LUCKY soon learnt that barking at people is not acceptable and he is now very friendly and happy to meet people, although at times he does still bark. This is something that will just need to be continued to work on, considering not many people come here, he has made excellent progress.

I cannot comment on the separation side of the families experience, only that he has had none here, but he is always with other dogs. As with humans, dogs act differently in different environments and if he knows that he is safe and secure and does not control the home, this might not be an issue, however, it is something any potential adopters need to be aware of.

He absolutely, 100% needs a family that is alpha and has the experience of young, high energy German Shepherds. If LUCKY does not have guidance, and structure in his home he will start to take control and start to own his home and owners, which is of course not acceptable. He is a very smart boy he just needs to know his boundaries and be made to understand under no uncertain terms what is acceptable and not. The softy, softy, fluffy approach with LUCKY is just not going to work - he needs strong leadership, as do most GSDs and working dogs.Whilst being at the rescue, other than barking at people, he has not shown any negative behaviour at all.

We have dog doors in the house and LUCKY uses them to go out and play or to do his business.

LUCKY would benefit from an active, fun family that has the time to work with him on his obedience and manners, who would take him on adventures, road trips and let him explore the sights, sounds and smells the world has to offer. By working together both LUCKY and his humans can learn each others body language and personality, expectations and boundaries can be set and with self-training a stronger bond formed.

LUCKY is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

LUCKY is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located inbetween two small towns, Dover-Foxcroft and Milo, both approximately 6 miles away and the closest major city is Bangor (approx 45 miles). Many families travel and make a mini-vacation out of the trip and stay in beautiful Maine for the weekend, however, if this is not possible and there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
